February 27, 2008 - Joe Louis Arena, “The Joe” has been home to the Red Wings since 1979. It cost a whopping $57 million to build, taking nearly 2 years to complete. It opened on December 12, 1979, and was named after heavyweight boxing champion and legend Joe Louis who grew up in Detroit, Michigan. Joe Louis Arena is one of the few arenas without a corporate sponsor.
The Red Wings hold the record for most consecutive playoff appearances out of every professional North American sports team (not just the NHL!) with 16 seasons.

February 27, 2008 - Red Wings legend Steve Yzerman spent 23 seasons playing for the team, and at the end of the 2005-06 season he announced his retirement, passing the captain title on to Nicklas Lidstrom. Yzerman’s jersey number, 19, was retired on January 2 before their game against the Anaheim Ducks.
Other retired numbers include Terry Sawchuk (1), Ted Lindsay (7), Gordie Howe (9), Alex Delvecchio (10), Sid Abel (12), and Wayne Gretzky (99). Gretzky was not a member of the team, but his number was retired league-wide on February 6, 2000. Gordie Howe holds the record for most points earned throughout his entire career with an incredible 1,809. He is followed closely by Steve Yzerman with 1,755.
