It opened on December 12, 1979, and was named after heavyweight boxing champion and legend Joe Louis who grew up in Detroit, Michigan. Other retired numbers include Terry Sawchuk (1), Ted Lindsay (7), Gordie Howe (9), Alex Delvecchio (10), Sid Abel (12), and Wayne Gretzky (99). Gretzky was not a member of the team, but his number was retired league-wide on February 6, 2000. Gordie Howe holds the record for most points earned throughout his entire career with an incredible 1,809. He is followed closely by Steve Yzerman with 1,755.
